What is Resource Estimation?

Just like population grows and depletes, mining resources follow similar mathematical patterns. We use differential equations to model resource depletion over time.

๐Ÿ’ก Key Insight: The rate of resource depletion is proportional to the remaining resource - just like population growth!

๐Ÿ“ Deriving the Depletion Formula

Step 1

Define the Problem

Let R(t) be the amount of resource remaining at time t.

The rate of depletion is proportional to the remaining resource:

dR/dt = -kR

Where:

  • dR/dt = Rate of change of resource
  • k = Depletion rate constant (positive)
  • R = Current resource amount
  • Negative sign = Resources are decreasing
Step 2

Separate Variables

Rearrange the equation to separate R and t:

dR/R = -k dt

This allows us to integrate each side separately.

Step 3

Integrate Both Sides

Integrate from initial time (t=0) to time t:

โˆซ(1/R) dR = โˆซ(-k) dt
ln(R) = -kt + C

Where C is the constant of integration.

Step 4

Apply Initial Conditions

At t = 0, R = Rโ‚€ (initial resource):

ln(Rโ‚€) = C
ln(R) = -kt + ln(Rโ‚€)
ln(R/Rโ‚€) = -kt
Step 5

Final Exponential Decay Formula

Exponentiate both sides to get the final formula:

R(t) = Rโ‚€e^(-kt)

R(t) = Resource remaining at time t

Rโ‚€ = Initial resource

k = Depletion rate constant

t = Time

๐Ÿ“Œ

This is the same form as exponential growth, but with a negative exponent!

๐Ÿ“ Practice Problems

Problem 1

A copper mine has 2 million tons of copper. It depletes at 5% per year. How much copper remains after 10 years?

Problem 2

A gold mine has 500 kg of gold. If it depletes at 8% per year, how long will it take to reach 50% of the original amount?

Problem 3

A cobalt mine has 100,000 tons. After 20 years, 60,000 tons remain. What is the depletion rate?
